Barrow Says the PM Got Scared So His Fees for Settlements Were Reduced

Denys Barrow

he negative campaign has focused on one particular instance in which Denys Barrow’s law firm was paid over five hundred and twenty-four thousand dollars for its role in a small settlement, which did not require court action. That was twenty percent of the payment to G.O.B. after a ship, the Paranga, caused damage to the reef. A small matter with a huge payoff, but Barrow says that twenty percent is standard in debt collections.

“Is that percentage in keeping with what your law firm will get for the settlements with Fortis and BTL?”

Denys Barrow, Attorney of G.O.B.

“Unfortunately my brother got scared and refused to pay me a percentage in relation to these matters. And therefore my political friends have done me the disservice of having my fees reduced. So regrettably no! No percentage for me.”

“The document they try to point to as proof positive is the service you did for the Paranga in which you were paid 20% which amounted to over $500,000 and they say just on a reactionary look on that it is exorbitant. Can you explain how that number was…if you would entertain us on that particular line?”

“But I think gentlemen all of us know that it is a standard debt collection fee to charge 20%. The banks charge it for collecting any debt. It is standard in the legal profession. So what I was charging is what is the standard rate for a collection. So it’s as simple as that.”

We’ll have more with Denys Barrow later in the newscast.
