Another Youth Walks on Murder Charge

Tonight, another Belize City youth is free of murder. At the conclusion of a trial by judge without jury before Justice Troadio Gonzalez, twenty-two year old Ronald Bradley, a resident of Mahogany Heights, was acquitted of the October fifteenth, 2010 murder of female Prison Officer, Miriam Gillett.  At a ruling handed down by Judge Gonzalez, a no case submission made by Bradley’s attorney, Oscar Selgado was upheld and he was freed after five years on remand.   The crown’s allegations against Bradley were that he unlawfully shot and killed Gillett during a shooting incident on the Burrell Boom/Hattieville Road.  Selgado argued that the prosecution had no evidence to submit because the sole witness, Ernest Savery, is now deceased. Savery was the driver of the vehicle in which Gillett was traveling. Selgado further argued that even if there was any evidence, it would be of such a tenuous nature and unsafe so the charge should be withdrawn and the accused found not guilty. Furthermore, a prison officer who testified could not positively identify the gunman and Bradley was released.
