Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington Addresses UN General Assembly

Wilfred Elrington

Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington was among the speakers this morning to address the United Nations Seventieth General Assembly.  Nineteen minutes long, his statement covered hot topic issues such as climate change, the Syrian crisis and other matters on the international scene. Elrington also offered the traditional support to Taiwan, calling for an end to the US embargo and for the return of Guantanamo Bay to the Cuba. But at the very end of his statement to the United Nations, Elrington made a disconcerting declaration in respect of Guatemala’s territorial claim to Belize. It lasted just about a minute and was placed in the context of the peace zone for the region. The Foreign Minister said that recently this year, Belize signed up a protocol to take the claim to the International Court of Justice. He makes absolutely no reference or admission that going to the I.C.J. is subject to referenda in both countries. Now, as far as we know, in April in Guatemala City, Elrington signed a protocol with his Guatemalan counterpart, allowing Guatemala to hold a separate referendum from the one that ought to be held in Belize.  Here is what he says:

Wilfred Elrington, Foreign Minister, Belize

“Earlier this year, we signed a protocol to the special agreement between Belize and Guatemala to submit Guatemala’s territorial, insular and maritime claim to our country to the International Court of Justice.  We expect that this will facilitate and speed up the process to finally and definitively put an end to the unfounded claims that have plagued us and our region for far too long.  I thank you, Mister President.”
