GSU Commander on New Policing Strategy

Mark Flowers

The Gang Suppression Unit was today seen giving back to the elderly in celebration of International Day of Older Persons….we’ll have that later in the newscast. But even before that community service initiative, you would know that the unit has been at the center of numerous allegations of brutality and use of excessive force on residents – in some cases their actions were documented on video. Earlier in the newscast, we reported that La Cabana Proprietor, Mike Menjivar is suing the Attorney General for compensation after the GSU stormed and assaulted his residence in Belmopan back in 2011. But it’s been some time now that there haven’t been public allegations against the unit.  Today, we asked GSU Commander, Superintendent Mark Flowers, of the strategy they now have in place to avoid confrontation with the public.

Supt. Mark Flowers, Commander, GSU

“I remember clearly I said to the media in August of last year that I didn’t want to be judged on what their understanding or perception or knowledge was on the Gang Suppression Unit. I also said that I was not going to superintend over any group that was into any controversy or any abuse and I told them to judge me from there into the future. I am certain that we would have continue and continue to be effective or even more than it was and that we don’t need more confrontations. We’ve been having more conversations with the public and we’ve been civil in the conduct of our policing styles and we’ve been forceful as we always were, but we don’t have the controversy. And I am happy that…either it is that the media has relinquished the mischief or what it is that the GSU has changed. At the end of the day it is that we are still working but we are not abusive. And I just want people to understand that I don’t know what it was in the past, but under my superintendence, there will be no such thing; we don’t condone that.”

I totally agree that the GSU needs to be very forceful when dealing with criminal gangs. They need to be eradicated like the vermin they are . . . BUT the Police Department, unfortunately, is very unprofessional and totally ineffective. Anyone who has had any dealings with them will agree with this. Their base problem lies with a total lack of proper supervision and accountability. GOB needs to deal with this problem before any real progress will be made.
