Why Aren’t There Any Candidates from N.T.U.C.B. on BPP Slate?

A new third party has emerged on the political scene as more of a labor movement than a liberal organization.  The Belize Progressive Party is closely tied to the trade unions.  In fact, the founding fathers of the new alternative action group meet with the National Trade Union Congress of Belize on a regular basis.  So, why aren’t there union members on the BPP slate?  That’s what we asked Party Leader Patrick Rogers at the unveiling of the BPP on Thursday.

Patrick Rogers, Party Leader, BPP

“We have identified the unions as our strategic partners and we explained to them, “look we know unu get burned by P.U.P. and unu get burned by U.D.P. and unu da like wahn woman [weh] unu fraid fi man now but we haftu court unu because da only with fi unu help we will be able to win this thing and mek di change that we need.”  So yes, we’ve been courting the unions very hard and maybe come October fifteenth or sixteenth we may yet have three, four, five union candidates step up, alright.  I mean we’re actually praying for that, nothing short of praying because we do wah lotta praying and we have seen where a lot of our prayers have been answered in the manifestation of the Belize Progressive Party.”

Patrick Rogers

“Can you as the party leader address the question of when you will have more candidates?”

Patrick Rogers

“Certainly, that is our commitment Belize that if we reach to twenty or more… I’m being realistic because, you know, eena two weeks lotta wife haffi get consulted, lotta husbands need to get consulted.  Da noh wahn decision we make on our own, we’re family people and if our spouse is against it we have to put weight on that.”
