Is There a Reduction in Poverty Rate? Let’s Ask Boots

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

According to statistics available, poverty has increased substantially so that over forty percent of the population is living in poverty. Notwithstanding, government has been claiming that the implementation of several initiatives, including the BOOST and Pantry Programs of the Ministry of Human Development, Social Transformation and Poverty Alleviation, have been met with success. In the south side of Belize City, even though disproportionate sums are spent; the number of persons living below the poverty line doesn’t seem to be diminishing. News Five asked Port Loyola area rep and Minister of Poverty Alleviation, Boots Martinez if he sees a reduction in the poverty rate.

Anthony “Boots” Martinez, Minister of Poverty Alleviation

“Yes there have been change in the numbers because what we have tried to do is the wrap around services. Like for example sake, we try to fit people in the BOOST program in the Pantry Program…under the South Side Poverty Alleviation Project, we sort to try to find land for them. I could talk in terms of transformation of my constituency and build a house for them and so forth and try to find them a little employment because that is important. Employment is important for the wrap around service because the BOOST program is not intended for any single person to stay on for a lifetime. The thing is that it is a help and the BOOST program comes with conditions.”

Duane Moody

“Are you saying that if a survey is done this year, it would indicate that the rate of poverty has decreased?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“Yes, in my view, sure. and apart from that I challenge the media. You can go and see that there are developments in various areas in the city and then you can make a judgment of that…see where people were living one year, two years ago and see where they are living now and look on the development, look on the employment issue.”
