New DHS Says There’s Critical Need for New Hospital in Belmopan

Ramon Figueroa

According to Figueroa, the bottom line is that there is a critical need for a new hospital in the Capital since the current hospital is the regional facility for the west.

On the Phone: Dr. Ramon Figueroa, Director of Health Services

“We have just had an evaluation done by the Pan American Health Organization in terms of the safety of the hospital and the acceptability of the infrastructure and really the official recommendation for us is to see how we can build a new hospital because we have a lot of leakage, we have a lot of inefficiencies in electricity, we have a lot of drainage that go under the hospital that were not supposed to be there. But at this point in time, that’s all that we have and we have to try to see how we can make the best out of what we have at this point in time.”

Mike Rudon

“Sir, in terms of the threat to the infant…we know that rats carry diseases—not only leptospirosis, but other diseases as well. Has there been any testing done to determine if there was any transmission, if the infant might have gotten infected?”

On the Phone: Dr. Ramon Figueroa

“Well the report I got today was that the baby is fine. Obviously we would have to have the baby under supervision and do some laboratory tests to ensure that he is okay. But the baby seems, at this point in time, to be fine.”

Mike Rudon

“I was going to ask you if there is any concern…maybe this is premature, but if there is any concern about liability in terms of a legal sense.”

On the Phone: Dr. Ramon Figueroa

“I’m not sure. It would be premature of me to say that…as I said, we spoke to the family, we explained to them the family and we tried to do what we could to allay the fears of the family; to try to see what immediate measures we can take to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again. As I said, what was reported was that they were able to find a little hole around one of the vents where the rat may have come in and that was sealed already today. But the long-term solution is really to look at the whole construction and infrastructure and basically build a new hospital.”

The health of our people should be the top priority( “especially for the defenseless new born” ) of the Governing Administration. Belmopan is the Capital of a Developing nation, and a New Hospital would be a good thing. But that will not happen, as the Barrow administration, uses the money from the people to fund his political agendas. I Know that change will happen, not with the UDP or PUP but with the people taking a stand and demanding that GOB spend the money in a new Hospital. I hope that Dr. Figueroa, would push this issue since he sees to understand the situation at WRH and a Cayo man we all need to back him.
