Do Residents of Caribbean Shores Pay More in Property Taxes?

Darrell Bradley

Are residents of the Caribbean Shores paying significantly more in property taxes than others elsewhere in Belize City?  It’s an assertion that Mayor Bradley’s political opponent, Kareem Musa, has made and which he describes as an unfair assessment.  But the mayor says that properties on the north side, particularly in that constituency, are seemingly larger and are therefore valued more than elsewhere in Belize City and does not necessarily amount to a deliberate increase in property taxes.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“In relation to whether or not the people in Caribbean Shores bear the lion’s share, if somebody makes a statement like that, as a reporter I would challenge you to ask them what the source of that information is.  You had asked me that before and I told you in relation to some of our data it doesn’t allow us to do an assessment like that to be able to say okay then exactly who pays in terms of property taxes.  Our data is something that we’ve worked on tremendously over the last three years to make sure everything is accurate, to ensure that everyone is paying a fair amount of taxes.  I would say that if you look at Caribbean Shores in terms of the sizes of the properties and if you look at both Caribbean Shores and Freetown it’s a fair statement to say that I would think that they would pay more in relation to the average person simply because the property sizes are larger and the houses ten to be bigger but whether or not they pay the lion’s share I wouldn’t want to make a statement in relation to that because I have not had an opportunity to look specifically at our data.  I would however add that in Caribbean Shores over the time that I have been mayor we have been able to deliver a significant amount of infrastructure and other developments.”

I wonder if Darrell and other UDP politicians understand what they are saying , in this case, about property taxes . Do they understand why there is a property tax, or do we really need it or the other nuisance taxes; or they are merely mimicking other countries ?? Think about it before you answer.
