35 Schools to Benefit from CDB Loan

Patrick Faber

This past Wednesday, all eyes were on the Fortis settlement, but there were other significant matters which passed through the House. One was a motion for approval for a Caribbean Development Bank loan for the purpose of education infrastructure. According to Minister of Education Patrick Faber, at least thirty-five schools that will benefit – twenty-two at the pre-primary level, five at the primary level and eight at the secondary level.

“This will entail a total of one hundred and forty-eight classrooms and laboratories, and of course furniture and equipment for these schools. We estimate that five thousand three hundred students, thirteen eighty at the pre-primary level, fourteen hundred at the primary level and about twenty-five hundred or so at the secondary level to be benefitting. Mr. Speaker for the sake of being absolutely clear…let me say that this again is the second part of this loan agreement with the Caribbean Development Bank to improve education. Colleagues will remember that the first tranche of the loan was for US two point five million dollars, and it was used for strengthening policy objectives and increasing equitable access to education at all levels. It was used for institutional strengthening, and now we have this portion of seventy million dollars which will be used for infrastructure.”
