What Would a Baldizon Presidency Mean for Belize?

Manuel Baldizon

The first round of voting in Guatemalan elections is scheduled for September sixth. Since Perez Molina’s resignation at midnight, polls show that the front-runner Manuel Baldizon from the Renewed Democratic Liberty Party, is now trailing behind independent candidate, Jimmy Morales. Baldizon’s proposed Vice President is also under investigation in another scandal. But according to PM Barrow, a victory for Baldizon wouldn’t be such a bad thing for Belize.

“Baldizon, who as I understand it is still the frontrunner, came to Belize and met with me before he was the frontrunner. He had already declared, but at the time I didn’t get the impression that people thought too highly of his chances. We had a long exchange at the Coney Drive Office and he certainly made it absolutely plain that if he were to become President of Guatemala we could expect a strengthening of cooperation between the two countries. We could expect a profile that would see his administration absolutely respecting again the separate reality of Belize. So without expressing any preference for any of the candidates I merely point this out because it does appear that Baldizon is likely to become the next President. Of course, if that happens, once the man assumes the reins of office things can change. But in terms of what I have to go on so far, I wouldn’t expect that a Baldizon presidency would mean any regression or special prejudice or disadvantage to Belize.”
