When Will the Next General Elections Be Called?

Dean Barrow

The region’s focus is on Guatemala, and on elections there set for September sixth.  But a little closer to home, there is much speculation about our own general elections. The Opposition People’s United Party has been floundering, while the ruling U.D.P. Government has been hitting the Petrocaribe piñata with regularity. So all told, political pundits suggest that elections are right around the corner. As recently as this week, rumours on the ground have suggested that November third is D-day. But why depend on rumours when we had the opportunity today to ask the man who will make the decision? Here is what the prime minister says.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“November third? November third? I am trying to….but why am I even thinking about it? I can’t know if my calculations have even contemplated the possibility of November third, because I have not yet made those calculations. Still no date! I don’t know. I will go as far as saying this, and I don’t think I’m giving away anything. Elections will be no later than the first part of next year. The P.U.P.s on the last occasion had said they think that the term should be a four year term. Quite frankly I agree with them and if we win again I would want to see that changed. Remember if we do win again that’s the last hurray for me. Whoever is coming next or has aspirations to come next might not agree with me but my personal position is that we ought to go back to a four year term. And I am thinking in terms of the next general elections of somewhere close to the four year mark which would mean then that we are looking at not beyond February/March of next year.”
