How Much is Barrow Administration Spending on Litigation?

Francis Fonseca

The Barrow administration, for better or worse, has been embroiled in seemingly unending litigation. And with that litigation has come criticism for G.O.B.’s choice of high-paid, select attorneys who have raked in millions over the years. That criticism was front and centre in today’s session, raised first by P.U.P. Leader Francis Fonseca. The PM has disclosed the dollars and cents behind the actual settlement, but now Fonseca wants full disclosure on how much was paid to Denys Barrow, the brother of the Prime Minister, who has represented G.O.B. in the protracted battle against Fortis, now concluded.

Francis Fonseca, Opposition Leader

“The real sweetness in this settlement is truly reserved of the Prime Minister’s family, Barrow and Company, the law firm of the Prime Minister’s brother Dennys Barrow, smiling all the way to the bank having collected millions of dollars in tax payers money in legal fees and today Mr Speaker on behalf of the Belizean people; we demand that the Prime Minster come clean, tell the Belizean People exactly how much tax payers dollars his brother has collected, he is the Minister of Finance, these are matters approved by him for his own brother and his own brother’s law firm, so come clean and tell us what he has collected and what other monies were given to other lawyers from the government in this matter Mr Speaker. Nepotism is corruption and Mr Speaker, this is naked nepotism.”

Said Musa, Area Rep., Fort George

Said Musa

“The case for the government, all the way to the CCJ, was argued by yes, Brother Denys, and he is a very competent lawyer and I am not in any way criticizing his competence. I am just saying that the Prime Minister is supposed to come clean with the Belizean people and tell us how much this the people of Belize are paying for these shares.”

Michael Finnegan

Finnegan, Area Rep., Mesopotamia

“When they do business and when they were in government, and they were the Michael Ashcroft deals and the Jeffrey Prosser deals and this deal and that deal, you know which lawyers benefited from it? Musa and Balderamos, You know the other set of lawyers that benefit from it Mr. Speaker? Courtenay and Company.”
