Inspiration Center Celebrates With Belize Jaguars

Today at the Inspiration Center in Belize City, children who access the services of the center were treated to a family fun day. Along with their parents, the staff and administration, the children participated in several sporting activities and more. As a special treat, the members of the Belize Jaguars were present to celebrate with the children. Duane Moody reports.

The Inspiration Center at miles one and half on the George Price Highway in Belize City came alive today as the administration organized a family fun day for the over one hundred plus children, who are currently receiving services from the center. The compound was retrofitted with an array of child-friendly games, including a photo booth, a pool, sand boxes, a dunk tank and even a bouncy house. Executive Director of the Inspiration Center, Joycelyn Lopez spoke about the treats the children are getting.

“It’s for them to come in and be able to enjoy the different sporting activities that we have out there for them because here in our very own country we don’t have anywhere else that does activities like these for these children. So because we are an institution that caters to the needs of children with special needs, this is why we are doing it. Today they will get to do a lot of sporting activities; they will have fun doing those activities, but while doing those activities they will be receiving therapeutic services as well right within those same activities. So it is interactive, fun and therapeutic activities.”

But a surprise feature was that the athletes from the Belize National ‘A’ Selection Team, the Belize Jaguars, attended the event to throw their support behind the center, the children and their families.

“As a national team, our social responsibility is also very important—not just on the field—this is very important to us. So as long as there is an opportunity for us, we will be a part of it. And at the end of the day, the country has been showing a lot of support for this team so it is only fair for us to show back our appreciation and give back.”

The Inspiration Center officially opened its doors back in April of 2014. Since then several children have been diagnosed with disabilities and have joined others to access the respective care offered at the center. For Dollis White, her son is autistic and the event is welcoming because it allows him to socialize with other children.

“This is my first attendance. We started January at the Inspiration Center and I strongly believe that this is a wonderful event for children living with a disability because most of the time we are left out of society and we can’t engage with the regular activity that they have right now. So I believe that this is nice and it is set up to individual needs—with the sand thing and…you know. My son has autism so he noh love any of the stuff. But I still attend, bring him out. I open my eye to a whole new thing right now because I neva know all of this is happening inside of our country. I see a variety of disabilities. It is not only one. When my son first diagnose, I say wow, where will I turn to? They referred me to the Inspiration Center and since then, a lot of information. Now it comes easy to me and I enjoy today.”
