Are N.T.U.C.B.’s Recommendations to Government Falling on Deaf Ears?

Marvin Mora

Marvin Mora, the president of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize says that government should proceed with the construction of the forward operating base on the mainland at the mouth of the Sarstoon River. But that may be falling on deaf ears. As you will recall, Guatemala has objected to its construction until the territorial dispute is resolved at the ICJ. That area is not part of the adjacency zone which means that the O.A.S. holds no brief over it. Now, the unions are also expressing disappointment that its recommendations are not taken seriously by government. One example Mora cited is the construction of a sporting complex.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“If you look at the BIL – the Belize Infrastructure Limited Board- they just get directives. Decisions have already been made. For example, one of the recommendations that was given to BIL and this recommendation came from the engineers that if they are going to build the sporting complex, it shouldn’t be built where the old city centre used to be, right across from Belize Water Services. The Board looked at that, made a decision and was voted upon and their decision was that they were going to take that to the Chetumal Street area where the new terminal will be and the bridge is there already. That was shot down by government. So how do you expect us to sing kumbaya with you when the decisions that we make are being overthrown?”
