Belize City Mayor on Crime in the Old Capital

Darrell Bradley

By our count there are up to seventy-eight murders since the start of 2015. Most of the homicides are in the Belize District with murder count in the city at the highest. In fact, Belize has the dubious distinction of being the fourth most murderous city in the world. On Monday morning, Belize City Mayor, Darrell Bradley said that crime and corruption are the biggest challenges in the old capital.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“The solution to crime situation is not a governmental solution. It has to do with government providing facilitative kind of opportunities. Job creation- this is one of the reasons why we are very pleased with working with organizations like Cisco Construction when in terms of them doing our road works and working closely with people who are marginalized, giving young people the opportunity to get meaningful employment for a continuous period of time. We in the city working with young people through this two weeks summer program and working in other areas. I have always maintained that the city isn’t the buildings or the streets that the city is the people, so we have to have serious conversations about where our people are in terms of social opportunities, that we are doing more in terms of housing. When I go in certain parts of Belize City and seeing where our people live in terms of the environment and the neighbourhood- those things contribute to crime. The lack of opportunity in terms of job creation, all of these things have are things which have a scourge in terms of the numbers. I think that as a leader of the city, we need to work very closely with other stakeholders, including members of the public, civil society and religious organizations to create opportunities for people to empower themselves. I have always said that the two biggest problems in our community are crime and corruption. If we can deal with those issues in very serious ways, then our society is really beautiful. No matter how much streets you build, if people don’t feel safe walking on the streets, it matters nothing. So that what we need to do and what we are doing to some extent is to really try to have an impact in economic development, job creation and social transformation, but I think that there is much, much more that we can do in the city and even at the central government for that specific issue. A lot of things are going on but I think there needs to be more coordination to bring everything together so that it has maximum impact to reduce the number of murders and also other kinds of serious crimes that are occurring in the city and throughout the country.”
