N.T.U.C.B. Slams Sedi for Guatemala Comments

Marvin Mora

The N.T.U.C.B. has come out swinging at Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, in response to comments he made during an exclusive interview with News Five late last week. In that interview Elrington spoke about both nations’ date with the ICJ, but the N.T.U.C.B. says he’s jumping the gun, since Belize hasn’t gotten the people’s permission to go on that date. More than that, the N.T.U.C.B. says that G.O.B. is putting Belizeans at risk by being too lax with Guatemala.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“What those comments are basically pointing to is that the government is taking some sort of a lax position in regards to the sovereignty of our country. The N.T.U.C.B. would probably be divided among a lot of other issues, but when it comes to the nationalistic stance that we have that is something that is really for us, priority.”

Mike Rudon

“Is one problem particularly…I have seen it expressed that the Foreign Minister speaks about going to the ICJ but he doesn’t speak about a referendum…”

Marvin Mora

“Actually that is one of the things that we highlighted in our press release…the fact that the manner in which he is expressing himself, he is actually expressing the position that he is taking as if it is already a done deal, that the country is going to the International Court of Justice without really making any mention of a referendum that is a must, as far as we are concerned, unless we are living under a dictatorship that we don’t know about. Other than that we are not taking our country to any International Court of Justice and putting our sovereignty on the line without a proper referendum being done first. As a Foreign Minister and as a government they are in charge of ensuring that we don’t provoke the Guatemalans, but at the same time they have to be very careful because in essence what they are doing is basically giving Guatemala more wings…not only to go to the ICJ or to continue to bolster their claim, but actually to start behaving in a way that they encourage incursions, they encourage the army to do what they want against our Coast Guard and our Army and our people, and they are actually putting our people more at risk than before. That is the view of the N.T.U.C.B.  So that’s the reason why that discussion took place. We look at the comments made by the Foreign Minister and we are not pleased with what he is saying.”

Mora says the N.T.U.C.B. is planning a countrywide campaign on the ICJ/referendum issue and also other critical issues affecting the country.
