Verdes and Jaguars Claim Victory in Friendly Games Against the Suchi’s from Guatemala

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The weekend brought out the National Male Football Selection as it continues preparation for its 3rd round appearance in the qualifier round of World Cup 2018 in Russia. Also making an appearance over the weekend was national champions Verdes FC who will face Gallos Blanco de Queretaro in the CONCACAF Champions tournament. Verdes hosted the Guatemalan professional team, Suchitepequez and both units got a shot at the visitors. Let’s start with yesterday’s national team match-up inside the Norman Broaster Stadium. Immediately into the practice match against the Guatemalan team, a swarm of bees also appeared suited up to play, forcing the players and the referees to respond appropriately. Things began to take shape for our team around the 14th minute when Elroy Kuylen picks out Ian Gaynair who looks for the far corner, forcing a tough finger touch save from the Suchi-keeper which could have found Deon McCauley who misjudged his pounce.

At the other end, this long distance dial from Juan Cardena is helped along by this heel from Emerson Cabrera that gets past Glenford Chimilio, but the keeper is bailed out by the offside whistle. On this press by Team Belize, Kafu Roches is taken down by the visiting keeper and so is Deon McCauley by the defense and the referee rightfully points to the penalty spot. Deon McCauley gets the nod and masterfully sends the goalkeeper in the opposite direction to give Belize a 1-zip lead. 4 minutes later, Elroy Kuylen sets up McCauley beautifully and the toe push makes it a 2-nil score. Don’t blink people because Elroy Kuylen comes up with a 2nd assist when at the 29th minute; he deals a perfect pass to Harrison Kafu Roches who smacks it home for the 3-nothing lead.

In the 2nd half action, this loose ball travels to Gabriel Perez and he reacts to strike at goal and he makes it 4-nil although he was helped by the Suchi defense. Meanwhile folks, the effects of mass changes and the field by the National Team might have led to a Suchi resurgence in the 2nd half. Amin August takes down Sergio Taqua inside the 18 to concede a penalty. Tequa takes it himself and beats Keith Allen to put Suchitepequez on the scoreboard. And then this set piece is poorly defended as the wall crumbles to a 1-man push. Kevin Ruiz takes advantage and Keith Allen is beaten. Nevertheless, Belize holds on to the 4-2 victory. The national team draw for the 3rd round of the World Cup Qualifiers is set for August 25th; however, the match dates have been set for September 4th and 8th.

Turning to the interoffice basketball scene over the weekend, Heritage Bank hurt Central Bank 58 to 67; Central Health handled Generals 47 to 43; Belikin bumped off Atlantic Bank 54 to 47 and BWS pressure pummeled Infotel 60 to 51. Finally in weekend warriors series, Kent Gabourel of Megabytes won the 38 miles for A & B riders in 1:35:51 Ray Cattouse was 2nd Kareem Flowers 3rd, Vallan Symms 4th and Mark Gentle 5th. Valentine Sosa of Truckers won the C-Class 22-miler in 1:07:44 with Eustace Ireland 2nd and Enrique Morales 3rd.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
