Former P.U.P. National Campaign Manager Breaks Silence on Abrupt Resignation

Godfrey Smith

In news of a political nature, on Tuesday, Attorney Godfrey Smith abruptly departed his post as National Campaign Manager in the wake of a third consecutive election loss by the party since the beginning of the year. No replacement has been found, but the matter is surely to come up next week when the party meets in national executive. According to the seasoned politician, his decision to step down is the result of a mutual agreement with party leader Francis Fonseca.  Following that short notice, both Smith and Fonseca declined comment on the matter.  This morning however, Smith was cornered upon exiting the Supreme Court.  Despite a rather brief response, he maintains that the decision was mutual.

“I had already made a statement to you all that it was by mutual agreement between the party leader and myself stemming out of conversations that we had.  I am not prepared to nor will I comment further on that state of affairs.”

“Sir, but it seems a bit abrupt and one would want to understand why would you make such a decision.”

“I repeat, I will not comment further than to say it was reached by mutual agreement and I ask you to respect that.”

As we said, there is no one exactly jumping up for the job. But one name that has been called is attorney Eamon Courtenay, who served on that post when John Briceño was party leader. All indications are, however, that he is not remotely interested in returning to that job which requires a serious level of operational work as well as getting the coffers flowing in time for the next elections, which many believe will be called early.
