Teenager Acquitted of 2012 Murder of Leopold Palacio

A teenager walked free from a murder charge today after Judge Adolph Lucas upheld a no case submission. Kadeem Anderson is now nineteen, but he was seventeen years old when he was accused of the May tenth, 2012 murder of Leopold Palacio Junior. Palacio Junior was shot and killed violently at the corner of Pelican Street and Central American Boulevard in Belize City.  This morning in the Supreme Court, Judge Lucas questioned the reliability and authenticity of the statement of the prosecution’s main witness, Dennis Talbert, and ruled it inadmissible.  Defence attorney for Anderson, Michelle Trapp Zuniga assisted by Peta Gay Bradley of Legal Aid Office in Belize City, made the no case submission on the grounds that the crown’s main witness did not ascertain the identity of the shooter and in trial, he told the court that he never saw the face of the gunman. In fact, Talbert said that Anderson was not the shooter.  Furthermore, Corporal Carmelito Cawich did not follow the rules of recording of statements because he had discarded the notebook on which he had written Talbert’s original statement.   Palacio Junior was shot multiple times to the body.  The doctor who examined him removed for slugs from his body during post-mortem.  Outside the courtroom today, Anderson’s siblings and mother waited for his release after spending more than two years on remand.
