Attorney General Discusses Justice System

Wilfred Elrington

It is known that there is a backlog of cases and decisions yet to be dealt with at the Supreme and Magistrate Courts level. According to the Foreign Minister Sedi Elrington, who is also the Attorney General,  the way forward requires improved efficiency to boost the performance and capability of the judiciary.

Wilfred Elrington, Attorney General

“I’m always concerned when people are incarcerated and locked up for years and years and years without having their cases heard. I am also concerned when in fact civil matters are before the courts for years and years or for months and months and no decision is given for the very simple reason; two very important things, business requires efficiency, a poor business man who has a matter in the courts needs speedy resolution if he is in fact going to be able to conduct his business. Because of the fragility of so many of our business, if the decision is long in coming some of these business need to go out of existence because they don’t get the funds that they thought they were entitled to and they can’t sustain their business. Also two when people have legal matters they would like to have it dealt with expeditiously. These are things that stay with you night and day and the faster you get a resolution the better you feel. When it takes long and gets dragged out people tend to lose faith in the system and many times they want to take the law into their own hands and just don’t want anything to do with the law. So the police or whether it is the courts, the desirable situation is for there to be greater efficiency and I can tell you that we are in fact being assisted by both the British and the Americans in a unique partnership which they have been carrying out in the Caribbean region to help us to enhance the performance and capability of our judiciary; both at the high judiciary which is the Supreme Court Level as well as the Magistrate level.”
