Sedi on Nestor Mendez: “He Elevates Our Profile…”

Nestor Mendez

In an extended interview with Minister Elrington, we also inquired about the installation of Nestor Mendez as Assistant Secretary General of the O.A.S.  It’s an auspicious occasion since for the first time, a Belizean will be installed as Deputy Secretary-General of the Organization of American States. Elrington told us what that means for the country, and also provided news of agreements which will be signed very soon with Mexico.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“It elevates our profile and it certainly indicates that in fact Belize is well respected in the national community for them to have such confidence they had in him. I’d like to think that the confidence that they see in him is a reflection of the confidence that they have for the government and people of Belize; you don’t have to go abroad for people to recognize you and to see how well you are doing. So that the international community is very favourably impressed with Belize and the activities that we have been in fact engaged in over the years and have reflected that by voting overwhelmingly for him to become the Deputy Secretary General. So it is very important for us and I think it is only right and proper that we have proper representation there when he is invested into office. And then from there, I will be leaving for Mexico where the Mexicans have been more than desirous of signing a number of agreements with us. In like manner in which the Guatemalans has signed those agreements, the Mexicans believe that the Guatemalans stole a march on them and they want to make sure that that doesn’t happen. So we have a number of agreements which we want to sign with them and a number of very good things for Belize which will enhance the relationship which we have with Mexico and which will bring tremendous benefits to Belizeans from all walks of life. So that is what we are going to be doing.”

“And in terms of his Excellency, Mister Mendez, would you be able to speak to us about any impact, if any, of his being appointed to the Deputy SG post as regards the relation between Guatemala and Belize?”

Wilfred Elrington

“Again, I do not think there will be any discernable difference in the treatment that is going to be meted out to us or to Guatemala by the O.A.S.  This is a professional organization and in the area that relates to the dispute resolution and monitoring, I don’t think that is an area that Nestor is going to be involved with.”

We’ll have more on the interview with Elrington in Friday’s newscast.
