Policemen in Myvette Shooting Allegedly Under Investigation

George Lovell

As we have reported, twenty-eight-year-old Leopold Myvette was shot and killed by police officers in Hope Creek over the weekend, in what is being described as a case of excessive use of force.  According to a police report issued on Monday, Myvette allegedly produced a firearm and trained it at the cops.  The officers responded by opening fire multiple times.  The question, nonetheless, is whether there was any need for such extreme violence of action. It’s a question that his family is still grappling with.  News Five spoke earlier today with C.E.O. George Lovell, who says that an internal investigation is underway and that the Professional Standards Branch of the police department is spearheading that probe.

Ret. Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“Whenever we have any incidents where it involves our law enforcement personnel, even if it appears not to be something that has been at the fault of our law enforcement personnel we still would do an internal investigation.  We have to do an internal investigation whenever these things happen so that we are quite certain that we have done all we could to ensure that there is no possibility of any blame to be laid on the police if they are not at blame.  And so, in this particular case, yes there is an internal investigation.  I can tell you that the head of the Professional Standards Branch was informed the same day we had knowledge of this incident and they deployed down south to Dangriga to investigate.  I’m yet to see the reports of those investigations but yes we have launched an internal investigation.”

We note that there have been numerous reports of police officers opening fire on civilians during arrest, the shooting death of Leopold Myvette is the most recent.
