Minor Detained for Murder of Kareem Clarke

Kareem Clarke

A Belize City minor is currently in custody for the murder of star reporter, Kareem Clarke. The minor was detained over the weekend by cops on patrol and the police strongly believe that the teenager is responsible for the cold-blooded killing of Clarke. The slain journalist was laid to rest on Saturday, almost a week after he was murdered at the corner of Vernon and Lake View streets in Belize City. Clarke was riding home from visiting with a friend in the Mayflower Street area when he was targeted by a gunman. Several shots were fired in his direction and Clarke was hit to the head, abdomen and chest. He died on the spot. At a press briefing today police say a motive has still not been established.

Supt. Hilberto Romero, O.C., CIB, Belize City

“At this time we have one minor in custody for that murder. We are doing follow up work right now and we will determine whether he will be charged. Our officers are working on that case right now. We have one minor detained at this time.”

“Has the motive been established?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“No, a motive has not been established.”

“Can you say if you’ve been having difficulties with setting this one up so that it can be given the order so that a charge can be made?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Again, we are doing follow up work and we will know by tomorrow whether we can charge him for that murder. Right now he is only detained on investigation at this time.”

“Is he cooperating with police?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“I will not go further to give the details. We will do our follow up work between today and tomorrow. Again, we have not established a clear motive. We know for certain Mister Clarke was not a part of any gang and the detention of this minor, we are getting new information and that is what we are following up at this time.”

“Sir is there any truth that there was an individual in the area who had witnessed the shooting of Mister Clarke, but is currently refusing or reluctant to giving a statement on what he saw for fear of repercussion?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“I cannot confirm if there is such a person. Again if there is such a person, we are asking for the public’s assistance. They can come in and give us the information and we can follow up on it.”
