Petrocaribe Drops a Quarter Million on the F.F.B.

John Saldivar

The chronically cash strapped F.F.B. has received a much needed infusion of cash and, you guessed it…it’s a gift from Mister Petrocaribe. The symbolic check was handed over this afternoon at F.F.B. headquarters in Belmopan, where national team players have assembled to prepare for the third round of qualifiers set for September.

John Saldivar, Executive Member, F.F.B.

“It’s a brief ceremony to receive the contribution of the Government of Belize towards the next round of our World Cup qualifiers and I am happy to have the Financial Secretary here who will be handing over a cheque, I believe for half a million dollars – laughs – a cheque for a hundred and twenty-five thousand Belize dollars. And we are extremely grateful for this generous contribution from the Government of Belize and I believe from out of the Petrocaribe Funds. So the football team is feeling some of the Petrocaribe love.”

Joseph Waight

Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary

“It’s an honour really to represent the Government of Belize at this function. The Government was called upon and willingly stepped up; found the funds to basically to support the national team and to wish you well in the next round and the round after that. And I think we can say that should there be another round—and we all expect there will—that the government can come again. So without saying much further we want to first pledge and continue our support and secondly to wish you all well. It shows that with the proper resources and the proper support, the potential of the Belizean youth is unlimited and we are here to see that we can get that potential to its maximum point. So again, on behalf of the prime minister and the government, cabinet and the Ministry of Finance, we want to…it is a pleasure to make this small contribution, we wish you well and to say more is on its way as we progress down the line.”

Michael Blease

Michael Blease, General Secretary, F.F.B.

“It’s a wonderful contribution, we expect more as Mister Waight says as we progress. Players and coaches as we move forward, expect more. We thank you so much for your hard work and good luck as we move ahead.”
