Football, Basketball Cycling and Track Stats in Sports

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

We head immediately to Big Bird’s Isle where Friday night, Atlantic Bank faced Generals in firms division basketball as the action heats up. In the opening quarter, it’s all Generals. This press looks like a practice 3-man weave as Tyrone Palmerston finds Wilfred Richards who deals to Ron Nicholson for the bucket. Ron would share the team high with 14 pts. Give some props to Wilfred Richards who would dish out the game high 4 assists – he hooks up with the witty veteran Cassian “the Russian” Flowers, who would fall short of the 2 doubles with 14 pts and 8 rebounds. The Generals boast a 17 to 9 lead at the end of the 1st. Atlantic Bank strikes back in the 2nd. Justin Wade with the long pass to Jaheed Smith and hits 2 of his 10 pts.  Shawn Stevens then draws a crowd in the land of the giants to get 2 of his 10 pts . this triple by Jaheed Smith makes it a 9 pt run for a 1 pt lead. However, this glass work from Cassian Flowers gives the Generals a 26-24 lead at intermission.

In the 3rd, Atlantic Bank takes over. Smith picks out Jermaine Tillett who would put up 8 pts, but would lead all players with the only double digit 11 rebounds and walk away with the highest efficiency rating of 17. No one steps up in time against Justin Wade who knocks down the 3. It’s Justin Wade and again he is not checked properly beyond the arc, so he hits another triple and would finish with the game high of 16 pts. Off this missed shot, Jaheed Smith grabs the boards and finds Herman Ramos down court who works his way to the hoop for 2 of his 11 game pts. At the end of 3, Atlantic Bank is up by 13. They would go on to grab the big win in a 55 to 44 decision outscoring the Generals 31 to 18 in 2nd half. In the other match-up Friday night, Central Health halted Infotel in a 54 to 50 nail biter.

In track and field news, we caught up with Saturday’s presentation by the Belize Amateur Athletic Association just in time to catch the female senior and junior meters run simultaneously. It’s a field of 6, but it quickly becomes a duel to the left of your screen as Charnelle Enriquez runs 12:09 to burn Tricia Flores who was clocked at 12:23 for the senior title. Meanwhile, the junior’s title was taken by Shanae Jex in 12:66; Gianne Humes pulled up 2nd in 12:97 and Latresa pastor 3rd in 13:81.

In 800 meters senior, Ernesto Villafranco rose above the competition winning the event in 2 minutes 6.94 seconds. Erson Moreira overtook Wilfred Usher at the tape to take 2nd place in 2 mins 21.69 seconds and Alexander Alvarado rounds out the top 4 in 2:43:02. Now here’s the start to the female 200 meters relay and there’s no doubt Charnelle Enriquez and Tricia Flores did their thing as you can see in the 1st and 2nd leg, but watch Kaydee Vaughan pull in lane 2, pull out all stops to get the baton to Shanae Jex, who takes it home in commending fashion to grab the win in 53 mins 30 seconds. 2nd place finished in 54:84.

Turning to the Smart’s Football Tournament….money time arrived Saturday inside the MCC Grounds when Brown Bombers took aim at Young Warriors in the title match. We’re in 1st half play when Jovaun Ramos tracks down this center into the box and beats everybody to the ball and finds the far corner to give the Bombers a 1-nil lead. And yes, his celebration is world class. Early into 2nd half play, Aylin Torres fires at goal from long distance only to hit the crossbar. The clincher comes when Eldon Byrd is taken down inside the box by Hector Pacheco. The referee rules penalty. Jovaun Ramos gets the call; goalkeeper Richard Williams has no chance for the save. We say congratulations to Brown Bombers, 2015 Champion of the Smart U-13 Tournament. Well done. We also want to say kudos to Jovaun Ramos for scoring the most goals and emerging as Most Valuable Player. Best forward went to Desan; Jose Garcia was voted Best Midfield; Anthony Parham, Best defense and Julian Medina, best Goalkeeper.

In other football news, play in Caye Caulker 9-a-side football over the weekend saw Tsunami blank CC United 5-zip. Lizard Juice doubled Danger Boys 2 to 1 and Rainbow FC and CC Boys battled to a 1-all stalemate.

Checking on the Belize Rural Softball Tournament yesterday, UB Jaguars mauled Lord’s Bank Sunrise 17-9; Easy Does It rolled over orchid Girls 13-6 while league leading Double Head Cabbage kept Country Rose winless in a 25 to 2 blast. Looking to this Sunday, UB Jaguars take on Willows Bank United, Double Head battles Easy Does It and Orchid Girls will face Lord’s Bank Sunrise.

Finally, in Weekend Warriors Cycling, 19 A Class riders are suited for yesterday’s 65 mile ride from Sibun Bridge on the Hummingbird Highway to Leslie’s Imports. Coming out of Belmopan, the pelathon remains more or less compact. So we fast forward to the finish line and it’s Robert Mariano of Digicell 4G with the big win in 3 hours 17 minutes 48 seconds overtaking and edging out Kareem Flowers of Santino’s for top honors. Jack Sutherland of Digicell 4G is 3rd, while Vallan Symms and Kent Gabourel round out the top in that order. For the 60 mile B Class ride, it’s a 3-man sprint. Warren Coye take the win in 2 hours 40 minutes. Ray Cattouse of C Ray is second; Isaiah Willacey of FT Williams is forced into 3rd. Meanwhile, Enrique Morales of Caribbean Tires took the 50 mile C Class in 2:20. Elden “Stone Jam” Hyde of Lampaz takes 2nd and teammate, Eustace Ireland, rounds out the top 3.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
