Was Foiled Gang Recruitment Motive for Weekend Murder?

David Rivas

There were three other murders over the weekend. The violence started on Friday night with the homicide of a Belize City welder. David Rivas was shot and died just hours into his twenty-second birthday.  But was his murder foretold due to gang warfare in the area? Rivas was shot multiple times to the pelvis, buttocks, thigh and calf by a pair of gunmen as he walked on Roches Street in Lake I. A minor was also injured during the incident. Andrea Polanco has the story.

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

David Rivas was shot four times on Friday night in Belize City. He was on this street talking with a group of women around ten that night when two men approached them and fired several shots hitting him and a sixteen year old girl. And within an hour in the early morning hours of Saturday, July fourth, what was his twenty second birthday, Rivas died at the hospital.

Supt Hilberto Romero, O.C., CIB, Belize City Police

“At around ten p.m., Police visited Roches Street in the Martin’s Area where they found David Rivas twenty one years with gunshot injuries. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead thereafter.”

“You said someone was shot along with him?”

Supt Hilberto Romero

“Yes, a female minor was shot with him and she is in a stable condition.”

“Was she accompanying him or..?”

Supt Hilberto Romero

“Yes, she was along with him at the time this shooting occurred.”

Rivas was a welder by profession and operated from his shop here on LaCroix Boulevard. According to his family, Rivas predicted his killing because tensions were high in the neighbourhood where he lived. Attempts were made to recruit him for a gang and when he refused, the environment became hostile for him, so much so that shots were fired at his residence twice. Was there a hit out on Rivas as he foretold?

Supt Hilberto Romero

“That is a lead we are following up on, that he had conflict with persons in that area, the martin’s area. He was hanging out a location in that area when he was targeted, but yes we have information that he had ongoing conflict with some persons in that area.”

“Has he ever reported any attempt on his life before?”

Supt Hilberto Romero

“No. no. He has never made any reports to us regarding any threats, no.”

“Can you tell us if he was known to police?”

Supt Hilberto Romero

“We have dealt with him for minor offences in the past and he is known to us, yes.”

No one else to blame but this useless impotent pm and udp gov. Over 5000 deaths with this udp gov. So a vote for udp is a vote for death.

Rod the racist at it again… so you didn’t comment on the other murder at the top of the headlines the but you chose to heap your racist rant on the P.M. using this story… I wonder why??? Before you wound your feable little one track racist mind let’s just say color was the defining factor. Lives does matter rod the racist no matter what shade of black you are and yes they were both black… news flash rod the racist even Hispanics and Mayans such as yourself is black and if you can’t stand Dean Barrow because souly because of his skin color I invite you to leave the country and go live in the US and have a chance to vote for Donald Trump which by the way will hate you even more because in his eyes you will be just another Mexican wet back and before you attack me for being pro UDP let me say I don’t support none of the two because they are one and the same. I however have a human obligation to defend my fellow man against lesser humanbeings such as yourself. Attack the man for what he stands for and not the color of his skin, he can change who he is but he cannot change who God made him to be. That is the most commical thing about racists such as yourself, you all claim to love God but heap hatred and scorn on his creation. Oh and incase you have been living under a rock all your life the population of Belize is predominantly mix.
