Bus-Owner is Prime Suspect in PG Murder

Juana Cardinez

After being reported missing by her boyfriend to police earlier this week, the motionless body of twenty-nine-year-old Juana Cardinez, a public officer working out of the Labor Department in Punta Gorda Town was discovered inside her apartment building.  The boyfriend is now a prime suspect in her murder and at news time remains in police custody where he was being interrogated earlier this afternoon.  The crime scene, according to family members who were able to positively identify Cardinez’s body, was especially gruesome.  The incident is believed to be a crime of passion.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano was in PG this morning and has the following story.

“When we went to the room and we approached the window we caught a stench and we saw a lot of houseflies so we returned immediately back to the police station and asked them for their assistance and they mobilized right away.  [We] thank them for that, you know.  They gathered their team and called the fire department to break the door down and when they went inside it was the young lady.  She was locked up in the bathroom and I went to confirm, you know, that it was the young lady and yeah, horrible scene.  [She] surely had a struggle with someone in that place.  Beat up, blood all over the place, horrible.”

The grisly discovery of the lifeless body of Juana Cardinez inside her apartment this morning, brought to a frightening end a desperate search for her.  The labor officer, stationed in Punta Gorda Town, had not been heard from since Wednesday evening.  Concerned, family and friends decided to go looking for her.  What they stumbled upon two days later was harrowing.

“This is rather difficult for the family.  Looking around, everybody is in a state of shock.  This wasn’t expected.”

“No. Not at all, I mean she is the only daughter for her mother and the bearer of the family, ih help ih ma a lot so she is taking it hard, very hard in Independence, you know.  But this is a shocker to everybody, I mean the family has been going through some tough times recently, you know, and this is just to add on that and it’s hard for them, really hard for all of us.  Especially a crime like this, you know, it wasn’t expected.”

“You mentioned that she was in an on again, off again relationship with someone.  At this point in time have you spoken to the police to find out whether this individual now becomes a suspect in what is believed to have been a murder?”

Hugh Linares

“I would guess he would.  He was the last person I believe saw her around six o’clock.  He is in her car.  She had her car and what we understand, all day Wednesday, you know.  Ih had another family who was with her up to five o’clock and she was in her car, so he would become a suspect, I believe.”

That individual has since been identified as Alberto Coleman.  Cardinez, a mother of one, reportedly had a tumultuous relationship with the bus owner.  Linares describes a conversation with Coleman when they were attempting to locate her earlier.

Hugh Linares

“We started to make some calls to the gentleman she had a relationship with here.  She had a relationship, the relationship was off and on and that full detail I don’t know much about.  So the mother called him and asked him if he, when he last saw the young lady and he said around, well this is what the mother said, you know, around six o’clock in the evening.  That’s Wednesday evening.  The mother called around seven, couldn’t get to her since.  So he went and made the report to the police station that the young lady missing noh, we noh yer from ahn, di mother di try get to ahn.  Ah noh sure weh happen between da di room.”

Sure enough, when they returned this morning and gained entry into the apartment Juana was found inside the bathroom, her blood smeared the interior of the space.  Outside, her family and friends were inconsolable.  According to Punta Gorda police, a large wound was visible on her head.  Hugh Linares, her relative, describes her personality.
