Lily White Summer Camp Kicks Off in the City

It’s the summer and that means camps are popping up across the city – camps on sports, education and even the creative arts. Today, however, the Lily White Summer Camp was well underway at the B.T.L. Park on Newtown Barracks. Hosted by Edward Rubio, the eight-week camp started on Tuesday and will run through to August thirtieth, providing approximately fifty-two primary school-aged children with educational and sporting activities. News Five stopped by today and spoke with Rubio about the camp.

“I have some volunteers; I have some students from different colleges that volunteer to help me tutor the kids. We have people that read to the kids; we have people do arts and craft; we have disciple group and we have a soccer group.”

“When did it start?”

“It started on June thirtieth and it will end August the thirtieth. It is an eight week program.”

“Tell us about what these kids are receiving on a daily basis.”

Edward Rubio

“Daily basis, these kids receive water, watermelon, banana, orange; we get garnaches, rice and beans. I try and give them as much as I can, but it is not the quantity that I would want to because I don’t have sponsors. I started with thirty-six and I have up to fifty-two kids and as you can see this is not half of them right now. We got some bathing, we got…everybody.”

Duane Moody

“Sir, how were they chosen?”

Edward Rubio

“Well they are chosen from the neighborhood. I go into the neighborhood that I see needed the support with the kids. We have a lot of kids that stay in the area and they don’t do anything; they idling themselves, breaking bottles and doing things. So before that, I bring them somewhere ina the open where I could really observe them, se what they are doing and teach them the things such as discipline, and teach them how to love and respect each other and others. This is the first year that I am doing it like this. Every year, I usually have it at Holy Redeemer, but it is a small group, like maybe thirty-five kids participate in football activity. This is more advance in a way because we teach them educational stuff as well.”

Rubio is still in need of some supplies and additional funding for his summer camp and is seeking assistance. He can be contacted at 667-9672.
