Prison Officers Beat Down on Inmate

According to Staine, the trafficking of drugs into the prison is rampant, and so is the abuse of prisoners. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg where the Belize Central Prison is concerned.

Voice of: Rujan Staine, Prison Officer, Belize Central Prison

“They always say if you’re trafficking, stop it. If you are not trafficking, keep it that way. But the only one they focus on are the basic grade officers, when it is the graded officers are the ones who are doing the trafficking. Just the other day, that same Tuesday, which was the second of June—if I am not mistaken—they caught G-Two Sho trafficking an ounce of weed in the prison.”

Mike Rudon

“Is that something which happens a lot; trafficking of drugs too?”

Voice of: Rujan Staine

“Yes because the inmates can bribe you with cash; sometimes they bribe you with cash that is double your pay in one day. So the trafficking happens a lot.  They also have the abuse of the QRT, where they handcuffed an inmate by the name of Asband Grant di other day. I am not sure what day because I was not on the compound; I was on day off. And they beat the inmate until they eventually broke his ankle and placed him in the Administrative Segregation behind iron curtain. That is a door that is completely blocked out with a full metal sheet—you cannot see in, you cannot see out unless you open the little door that is used to pass the water and the food. They placed him there for three days before they took him to the medic center for medical attention, with a broken ankle.”

Mike Rudon

“Is this something that you know that happens to other prisoners as well?”

Voice of: Rujan Staine

“Well you have times that the QRT yes beat up inmates because a lot of the inmates threaten the QRT officers that when they get released into society that they are going to take matters into their own hands for taking advantage of them.”

We’ll have more from Staine in Tuesday’s newscast, as he speaks out about what he says is a rigged parole system and a bogus rehabilitation program.
