Sporting Highlights with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

There comes a time when opportunity presents itself and indeed you’ve got to grasp it with both hands. 3 days after defeating the Dominican Republic 2 to 1 on their home ground, the national male football team of Belize hosted its 2nd round opponent in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers yesterday at the F.F.B. Stadium. History was in the making. The Jaguars jumped out to an impressive start. Danny Jimenez deals to super striker Deon McCauley but the launch is hindered by good defensive play from Hemsley. Cafu Roaches then dances his way past the defender to launch this right foot shot that allows the DR keeper to strut his stuff. Jimenez would have an impact on this game. Some 17 minutes in, he floats this ball to Harrison Cafu Roches and this time the striker finds the back of the net for the 1-zip lead. Jimenez continues in the attacking mode, beating the goalkeeper who comes off his line but is unable to capitalize. At the 36th minute, this set piece launch from the defensive area finds Elroy Kuylen who uses his chest to control and fires this left foot blast to give Belize a 2-zip lead. His celebration is just as entertaining. Looking for a 3rd, Kafu Roches threats the needle to Deon McCauley who is failed by this touch past the keeper. Belize remains in the ascendency going into intermission as offense was totally lacking from the visitors in 1st half. In the meantime, Danny Jimenez continues to push his team in the 2nd half. Here he beats his man and fires this right foot but it’s right at the keeper.

The visitors try to find some offense down 2 nil and could have been rewarded for this effort – only the finish is lacking. Jaguars keeper Woodrow West gets some work to do on this Dominican press and he ends up conceding a corner kick. Folks it’s late in the ballgame when Deon McCauley and Khalil Velasquez deals and McCauley’s header makes it a 3-zip win for Belize. people, it’s the 1st time Belize advances to the 3rd round in the World Cup qualifications round. It’s the 1st win at the F.F.B. Stadium. Deon McCauley leads the world in scoring with 3 goals along with 6 others around the globe. Elroy Kuylen is among 22 players who have scored 2 goals at this juncture. Folks we beat a team that demonstrated very little defense which means things will only get tougher. We’ll know we face next when the 3rd round draw comes up on July 22nd at Russia. As Coach Charlie Slusher said, it’s a big win yesterday, but there were some glaring shortcomings. Nevertheless this is a time for celebration. Congratulations Jaguars.

In other football news, play in the 4th annual Smart 13 and Under Tournament saw Collet Strikers edge Lace of Belize 1-zip. City Boys and London Strikers rallied to a scoreless stalemate; Brown Bombers downed Rising Stars 3-zip; Carlston Strikers burned 3rd World 1-zip; Hattieville Youth and Heights FC ended nil-nil and Young Warriors got the win over Ladyville Jaguars.

In basketball news, we caught up with Friday night’s interoffice match up at Bird’s Isle between Central Health and Digicell 4G. It’s a 6-6 tie in the ballgame when Nicholas Neil finds Steven Wade who sinks the triple and would put up 12 pts for Central Health. Harris Patten adds to the Central Health run staying with this play to grab the rebound and stick the put back. He would score the game high of 14 pts and also had 6 rebounds. At the end of the 1st quarter it’s a 17 to 10 lead. Digicell 4G try to fight back, Linsworth Graham hits from beyond the arc and would put up 6 pts. Give Lennox Cayetano some props for this dunk as he scores 2 of his 6 pts. Raheem Staine storms through the paint for 2 of his team high 11 pts. Travis Bernardez beats everybody down court on this play and would finish with 10 pts. Central Region goes on to post the 59 to 45 big win. In the nightcap, Belize Bank Bulldogs overcame Central Bank in a 59 – 53 final score.

Finally folks, the weekend warrior regular Sunday race found some 26 riders suit up for the ride. In money time, it was Warren Coye of Team Santino’s winning in a 5 man sprint, forcing Kirk Sutherland of Digicell 4G into 2nd, Santino Castillo hangs on for 3rd, but would also claim the 1st prize for ‘B’ riders. Mark Gentle takes 4th, while Vallan Symms of Benny’s rounds out the top 5.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
