Teens Charged with Theft Given Option to Join Apprenticeship Program

Ezmir Garrido

Two teenage friends have been given the choice of attending and completing the apprenticeship program or spending time behind bars after one of them pleaded guilty to theft today. Eighteen-year-old Ezmir Garrido and a fifteen-year-old minor appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith this morning, charged for theft. According to reports, Garrido and his friend snatched a purse from a Burrell Boom resident last Friday morning. They were detained by the quick action of Police. Garrido pleaded guilty this morning, explaining that the minor was with him but did not take part in the crime. He explained to the Chief Magistrate that he stole the purse only so he could take care of his child, since he had been fired from his job for always being late. Smith ordered that both youths attend the Youth Apprenticeship Program, since neither is employed or attending school. They have been ordered to attend the program each day, which will allow them to learn a skill while earning some money. If they slip up, they will then be taken back before the Chief magistrate for further action.
