Petrocaribe Celebrates Tenth Anniversary in Belize

Lough-Ann Burns Martinez

The tenth anniversary of the Petrocaribe initiative was commemorated today in Belize City with a brief ceremony held at the Memorial Park.  The oil alliance which is made up of seventeen Caribbean states, plus Venezuela was launched in June 2005, it was decided through the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas that the initiative would go beyond oil to promote economic cooperation.  In Belizean waters is the Simon Bolivar, a training vessel for the Venezuelan Navy.  The ship is named after Simon Bolivar, the liberator of Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.

Lough-Ann Burns Martinez, Belizean Ambassador Designate to Venezuela

“The symbolism of this arrival of this absolutely splendid hull ship named the Simon Bolivar is timely.  You have graced our shores as we reach the tenth anniversary of the Petrocaribe Agreement.  What clear lineage could there be between the ship, its namesake and Petrocaribe?  Two hundred years ago Simon Bolivar, the Great Liberator, in his letter to Jamaica, called for unity and for self determination.  So many years later this Petrocaribe initiative which is firmly based in the belief that we have as fraternal nations, that we own the right to determine how best to steer our economy and our policies for the betterment of our people and countries carry on this very vision.  It is up to us to make the most of this unique opportunity and it is a mark of our maturity as nation states how we apply it to navigate our own future.  To repeat the words of your late Comandante President Hugo Chavez in relation to why Petrocaribe is so important.  He chose to echo the thoughts of Simon Bolivar.  We want to be brothers and sisters.  We want respect and equality.  Simon Bolivar, our father, called for a balanced world, the universe a balanced universe in order to have peace and development.”

Yoel Perez Marcano, Ambassador of Venezuela to Belize

“Long live the friendship between the people of Belize and Venezuela!  Long live Petrocaribe program.  Thank you and good morning everybody.”
