UWI Calls off Forum on Petrocaribe Loans Act

A well advertised forum on the controversial Petrocaribe Loans Act and the use or abuse of the funds was scheduled to take place at the University of the West Indies this Thursday. All was in place but on the eve of the event, the UWI abruptly called it off.  UWI Open Campus Head, Jane Bennett wrote to the panel of speakers: Dickie Bradley, Mose Hyde, Senator Mark Lizarraga, Paco Smith and Audrey Matura-Shepherd that a decision to postpone the event until further notice had been taken. There is word that the postponement was the result of pressure from the government. Bennett, however, told News Five that it was her decision alone. The reason: she needs a balance to the forum. The postponement is not going down well and at least one of the speakers is taking umbrage at the decision and has fired off an email to Bennett. Audrey Matura-Shepherd says she doesn’t accept the explanation because in fact government will have its own presentation the day after the passage of the amendment of the Loans Act. She writes (Quote) “I do not buy into your reason for pulling the plug and until I can be convinced otherwise or see otherwise, it would mean to me that you have lost your moral and ethical compass and clearly have shown your bias on this issue.  This is especially so since G.O.B. will be having their own presentation on June 25, a day before the amendment is passed through the National Assembly and for your information we have not been invited… also it is counter-productive to have both sides on the same platform since the Petrocaribe people have all the money to bring their rent-a-crowd to disrupt and heckle those who say anything against their unlawful conduct under our laws and if you are so concerned about being fair… please also note that being fair means being fair to the voiceless… those of us who do not have the Petrocaribe money to buy air-time, create adds, influence bus-loads of youths, bribe voters through Christmas cheer and Mother’s day cheer, buy the silence of fellow politicians etc… a University is a place of higher thinking and in other countries is the seat of the people’s revolution through discourse, forums, debates, seminars and any vehicle of education and information.” (Unquote) As we said Bennett said the decision was hers alone.
