…Residents Say GSU Responded Forcefully

Mark Flowers

Personnel from the Gang Suppression Unit have been deployed to Caye Caulker where they have remained stationed since Monday night.  The GSU was summoned to the island during a heightened state of unrest among residents who took to the streets in protest following Sotz death.  Amid the chaos, an angry mob proceeded to target the quarters of the officers assigned to the island. Despite the presence of police in riot gear, they threw missiles, including acid bombs at the barracks.  Residents maintain that the GSU responded in force, firing off what they allege were hundreds of rounds into the air to diffuse the situation.  This morning, we spoke with Commander Mark Flowers who told News Five that the elite unit wasted no time in bringing the situation under control.

Mark Flowers, Commander, Gang Suppression Unit

“We were summoned to the island yesterday evening and we responded.  There were some agitation by residents and we came to ensure that the continued enforcement of the law by enforcement authorities is sustained.  We have to have the police’s presence and whilst people have a right to be riled up it must be done in an orderly fashion.  We are here to ensure that there is order and business continues out here, the way of life, the legal activities are to continue.  We will ensure that the police are operating safely and that the investigation is not hindered by threats or by the hurling of stones and pint bottles and things.  We’ll ensure that we enforce the law and maintain order.  We’ll be here for as long as it is necessary and we will continue to act in support of the police.”

Isani Cayetano

“With regards to public safety in the aftermath of the unrest on Monday, what would you advise residents or visitors to Caye Caulker within the next few hours or the remaining days in the week?”

Mark Flowers

“It is my understanding that there will be a demonstration sometime this afternoon and I hope that it is done before the dark sets in…and the properties around.”

The increased police presence has returned a sense of normalcy to the island.  Late this evening when we checked, we were told that the results of the autopsy on Sotz’ body won’t be made known until Wednesday.

You damn if you do and you damn if you don’t. When the GSU stand down and crime start rising, you here the rhetoric that the police is not doing their jobs. When the GSU is out putting pressure on the criminal elements you hear they are killers or they are advantageous…… In Belize our people have a one track mind, hence is the reason we in this cannot see past our noses! I am going to say this to the world….. I am a lover of the law and if I had my way, I would push to bring in a death squad by law to deal with these criminal elements at large……. And for those with the high level of negativity towards police this what I have to say to you…….. Since you hate the law so much….. When you become a victim of the criminal elements…… Do not call the police call upon the same criminal that you are so protecting and see what level of justice you get…….. As for the issue in Caye Caulker I am proud of the actions taken by the Commissioner of police, for they move in quickly and accessed the matter and without prejudice made the relevant arrest…… But you would never here the public commending them for doing their due diligence in arresting one of their own……………………

I know they are harsh at times but who has else has no regard for human life than the hard core gangs. if there weren’t anyone to keep them at bay Belize city would be overflowed with unimaginably amount of mass murders and killings . I realized that the rate of innocent lives taken by gang violence has reduced especially in children. you think Belize is bad? They are other countries much much much more worst. Belize is paradise for those people living there.

I couldn’t have said it better myself Mr. Martinez .
