Former Party Leader Comments on Ramos Debacle

John Briceño

So it is very likely that the P.U.P. will bow out of the bye-election set for one month from today. That means the party would give up, voluntarily, another seat, which it won in the 2012 general elections. It would also send the message that the P.U.P. is as weak as the incumbent U.D.P. consistently says it is. But did it have to come to this? Could the party have handled the Ivan Ramos situation differently?

John Briceño, Former P.U.P. Leader

“I think that the whole issue with Mister Ramos…I’m sure that as a party it is something that came more from Dangriga where they had different opinions or reasons for wanting to support or not wanting to support Mister Ramos. As I understand, because I have not been a part of the process, Mister Ramos then at the end of the day decided that he was not going to contest. I think that we need to be grateful to the work that Mister Ramos did when he was an area representative, when he was a standard bearer. He worked very hard for the party and for the people of Dangriga, Sarawee and Hope Creek. We need to recognize the work that he did and we need to thank him…his family, his supporters because it is a big sacrifice that all of us have to do when we make that decision to serve the people. But that is gone, now we have a new candidate, Mister Sabal. I’ve just met Mister Sabal; he seems to be a very good candidate. He seems to be a person that is in touch with the people in Dangriga; somebody that’s been an educator, he is very eloquent. He has all the qualities of a good candidate and qualities for a good representative. So I have the confidence that for the elections, Mister Sabal is going to do well and he can very well win the elections in Dangriga.”
