Ivan Ramos Says He Didn’t Go Against P.U.P. When He Accepted Petrocaribe Cheer

Ivan Ramos

The resignation of Ivan Ramos, the area representative of Dangriga, has spawned a number of allegations and left the P.U.P. scrambling. Well, at the centre of all the controversy and allegations is, you guessed it, Petrocaribe. Ramos accepted monies under the “Father’s Day Cheer,” a decision that went against the position of the P.U.P.  But did Party Leader Francis Fonseca make that decision without consulting his P.U.P. members in the House? Why was Ramos the only person to take the monies? Well, we asked Ramos all about that in our interview with him on Monday. Here’s how that went.

Ivan Ramos, Resigned from House of Representatives

“The Party Leader, yes in the debate made a declaration and I can say to you that when we were in the members room many were like, ‘weh just happen? What should we do?” So, it’s not like I went against the party. The people understand. This is not a grant; it’s a loan so then what do we do then with those other areas. If we look at Dangriga then do we say no to the streets and other projects that we have. If you listen to the other members of the opposition very often that we make presentations to the government that they are not doing enough in our area. So, what should be our collective response, no, no, no? If you go back to various house meetings, the four of us very often would make submissions calling out the government to say hey you need to fix streets and do the other. That is what we have been doing so it is a bit contradictory to say that we want this for our area and for our people and then we take positions otherwise.”

“Now, if you look at the monies for “Father’s Day Cheer” would you say that is pro-development?”

Ivan Ramos

“Umm…well, not in the holistic sense of development but if you look at the Christmas Cheer, I know people benefitted tremendously from that and were appreciative of what we did and I think the other members will say the same thing and when we talk about these programs I can say to you of my other colleagues in the southern caucus this is how we look at it.”
