Ivan Ramos Resigns from House of Representatives, PUP Leader Responds

Ivan Ramos

A late evening press release from the government has confirmed that a bi-election for the Dangriga Constituency will be held exactly one month from today, on Wednesday, July eighth. So how could this happen…two People’s United Party candidates resigning from the House…two bi-elections in just a few months?  The stepping down of Dangriga Area Representative Ivan Ramos is the worst of news for the People’s United Party. The grand ole Party has struggled with internal conflicts and empty pocket syndrome, while the United Democratic Party is positively floating on Petrocaribe funds. So again we ask…how could there be another resignation of an elected representative? Today, Party Leader Francis Fonseca provided some answers, along with an allegation that Ramos was bought off by the U.D.P.

“We are aware that over the past few weeks Mr. Ramos and agents acting on his behalf have been in discussions with the United Democratic Party in pursuit of a mutually beneficial outcome in respect of the Dangriga seat. While I am not in a position to provide you with evidence of the nature and contents of that agreement, speculation as you know very well has been far and wide and I can tell you that the most frequent question I have gotten in the past twenty hours is – is it true that Ivan Ramos was paid to resign his seat? This is obviously just speculation, just an allegation, but it is a serious one. Similar allegations arose at the time of Joseph Mahmud’s resignation in Cayo North.  I’m not the kind of person who can flip a switch and stop liking or caring about someone. I like Ivan Ramos and I care about him. I believe he is a good man who has made a terribly bad decision. This decision I believe reflects badly on him and his commitment to serving the people of Dangriga.”

“You have said you like Ivan Ramos, but yet the party is striking, attacking…within hours of his making an announcement…is attacking his credibility, his honesty, his integrity, and this is his party. Is there any concern on your part that without evidence, based on just speculation, the party would attack him so directly?”

Francis Fonseca

“What are we attacking? I made a very clear statement today that we are disappointed with his decision and we are concerned with the rampant speculation surrounding that decision. I think that is absolutely fair and I think we have an obligation to be concerned when our people in Dangriga, the very people who elected him, who voted for him, are expressing those concerns to us…when they are concerned that there have been high level meetings between the U.D.P. and agents of his. They are concerned. Why should we not be concerned about that Mike?”

This is Julius Espat’s PUP. Surprising that he allowed Francis to speak. This is the PUP as long as Julius is running things. They’ll never have a chance to win an election again, thanks to Julius.
