Fatal RTA Claims Life of Burrell Boom Resident

Raphael Martinez

There were two fatal accidents over the weekend…one in Sand Hill, Belize District and the other in Hicatee Village, Toledo. On Saturday afternoon, fifty-seven year old Oscar Chacon of Burrell Boom village was knocked down and killed as he crossed the Phillip Goldson Highway near its junction with the Maskall Road. Orange Walk resident, thirty year old Kayir Benavidez, who was driving his Chevy SUV, could reportedly not avoid hitting Chacon. The impact sent the older man to the pavement; he sustained massive head and body injuries and died on the spot. Chacon’s body was transported to the K.H.M.H. morgue where it awaits post mortem examination.

Raphael Martinez, Police Press Officer

“On Saturday, the sixth of June at approximately four-fifteen in the afternoon, Ladyville police responded to an area on the Phillip Goldson Highway at the junction of Sand Hill/Maskall Road where they saw fifty-seven year old Oscar Chacon lying on the side of the road with extensive head and body injuries, apparently dead. Initially investigations revealed that Chacon had previously crossed the street and a vehicle that was driven at the time by thirty year old Kayir Benavides of Orange Walk town was approaching. However, for some reason unknown to us, Chacon decided to return across the street and unfortunately was hit in the process. Chacon was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. And Benavidez was served with a notice of intended prosecution.”
