Football and Basketball Dominate Weekend Sporting Activities

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Friday night saw the opening game in the semi-pro basketball championship which saw the defending champions, San Pedro Tiger Sharks grab game I of the 3 game series in a 77 – 64 final score over Cayo Western Ballaz. Darwin Leslie did most of the damage with a 27 point output, 4 rebounds and 4 steals to be the man of the match. Raul Roches was also magnificent with 13 pts 3 rebounds and 4 steals while James Milton threw up 10 pts in the 77 to 64 big win. For Cayo, MVP Richard Troyer was his stellar self with 19 pts 7 rebounds and Elvis Usher played big with 14 pts and Geovanni Leslie puts up 11 pts in the loss.

So we head to La Isla Bonita for yesterday’s game 2 with the Ballaz facing a must win situation – win or suffer the fate of being a bridesmaid 2 years in a row. Darwin leslies demonstrates he’s still on fire in game II when he gets this pass from Ashton Edwards and opens the scoreboard for San Pedro with this triple. Leslie would strike for all of 18 pts tonight. However, the big man tonight would be James Milton who takes on the entire Cayo defense, grabs his own miss shot and sinks the ball. And at the end of the 1st, it’s an 18 to 7 San Pedro lead.

The Ballaz come back in the 2nd. MVP Richard Troyer takes on Darwin Leslie, sinks the difficult 2 and thinks he deserves a trip to the charity stripe. It’s Troyer again when Kurt Burgess finds him on the cut—the 2 is automatic. Troyer would post a 2 double of 21 pts, 11 rebounds. Tonight, Troyer’s double would be eclipsed by the play of James Milton who finds the bank open. Milton would record game highs with 22 pts 16 rebounds—quite a piece of work for which he would get the efficiency rating of 33. For a while, it looked like a head on clash as Troyer responds with this jumper and at the half, the Ballaz are behind 31 to 26.

Early in the 3rd, Darwin Leslie gives up his body for the team to sink this bucket. Troyer comes back to land this triple. Ivan Flowers then penetrates to go glass for 2 – he would miss the freebie off the foul, but would record 10 pts. It’s a 2 pt Islander lead at the end of 3. In the 4th, this flagrant foul on Keith Acosta by Raul Roches takes him out of the ballgame, but the Ballaz would get 3 pts from the incident to take a 50 to 47 lead. The Tigersharks repond – Darwin Leslie banks in 2 pts. On this Ballaz press, James Milton after this shot from Elroy Willis – Kurt Burgess stays with the play to get the bucket to record 8 rebounds and 9 pts. Alas in the remaining 5 minutes, the San Pedro Tiger Sharks would outscore the Western Ballaz 14 to 5 to earn a 61 to 55 win and repeat as champions in the semi-pro basketball. We say congratulations – 2 ain’t no fluke.

In softball news, play in the Belize Rural Tournament yesterday saw Double Head Cabbage blast Lord’s Bank Sunrise 16 – 1, Willows Bank United walloped Country Rose 13 – 5 and Easy Does It rolled over UB Jaguars 18 – 10. This Sunday, Country Rose takes on Orchid Girls; Easy Does It battles Lord’s bank Sunrise and Willows Bank sees action against Double Head Cabbage.

Checking in on the football scene, the national male team of Belize will travel to the Dominican Republic tomorrow to kick off the 2nd round in the World Cup qualifiers. We play game 1 on Thursday with the return trip set for Sunday 14th June at Belmopan. We caught our team in its last preparatory outing against an all star selection from Melchor, Guatemala. Yesterday’s outing was supposed to hone our defensive approach to the Dominican Republic. The Jaguars mount this 1st offensive foray when Deon McCauley gets led to the left by Harrison Roches; McCauley beats his man but the defense recovers and Jordi Polanco is forced to retreat. In the meantime, this center off the left wing finds Kafu Roches, but he steers it wide off goal.

Kafu Roches tries to make amends when he turns on this ball in an acrobatic strike only to be denied by the crossbar. Some 31 minutes in, Deon McCauley demonstrates his scoring ability, beating one man to launch this left foot that rebounds off the keeper and then bounces off the defense for the 1-zip lead. Deon McCauley looks for a 2nd with this header but does not get enough on it to reach the net. Folks, we must say our goalkeeper, Shane Orio, was not tested in this outing as we go to 2nd half. Meanwhile, Danny Jimenez penetrates inside the 18, but fails to find the far corner. Folks, Evan Mariano then gets this opportunity to double the lead – the shot goes wide. Belize takes the 1-zip win, but not convincingly. Nevertheless, win, lose or draw, I’m a Belizean and I know you are too.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
