Charges withdrawn against accused U.B. embezzler

His name appeared in the media last March when he lost his job as head of U.B.’s Continuing Education Programme and was charged with theft for allegedly embezzling university funds. But today twenty-nine year old Mohammad Kamruzzaman has been given a clean slate as Crown Counsel Marjorie Moyston of the D.P.P.’s office told Justice Troadio Gonzalez that they would not prosecute the case at this time. The nolle prosequi motion, while relieving Kamruzzaman of the theft charge, does leave the door open for future charges if the D.P.P. so decides. The U.B. administrator was accused of embezzling one thousand, four hundred and ninety-five dollars between August 2002 and January 2004, although police were investigating the disappearance of an estimated one hundred and sixteen thousand dollars from the university’s coffers. Under today’s ruling, Kamruzzaman will get back his passport and the four thousand dollar bail he posted. No other employees have been charged in connection with the embezzlement at the University of Belize.
