Elrington Confirms that Sarstoon Island is in Belize

Wilfred Elrington

This morning, we asked the Foreign Minister of Belize about the location of the island from where the coastguard was extracted. According to Wilfred Elrington, he got a situation report from the Guatemalan Chief of Intelligence since he was in Guatemala City at the time the incident unfolded.

“The island that exists in the middle of the Sarstoon river at the very entrance, is Belizean territory?”

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“That’s right. In terms of our officials, there is no question about that. But I will tell that the evening I was in Western Camino Real Hotel in Guatemala when the Chief of Intelligence of Guatemala came and told us about the incident. They wanted to know what was transpiring and they showed us, using the google map what the incident took place. Immediately, my C.E.O. who was there, Sylvester, told them that is Belizean territory. There was no questioning and doubting, we said it was Belizean territory. Their position was that the island was immediately in front of a Guatemalan Village. Guatemala got panicky, they were panicking because they didn’t know what these military people from Belize doing there were and so they got in touch with them and in terms of that they went to investigate and then got in touch with us to find out what was going on. Again, that is all consistent with preventative diplomacy.”
