Would-be robber gets 5 years

This week a notorious bad man was sentenced to five years in jail for an attempted robbery gone really wrong last October. On Monday, twenty-seven year old Wayne Castillo told the court that on October twenty-second 2004, he walked into the Maya Tortilla Factory located at the corner of West Canal and Water Lane. He requested fifty cents worth of tortillas, but as the attendant, Thomas Cal, turned to get the food, Castillo pulled out a screwdriver and demanded money. Little did Castillo know that Cal had been in that position before and rather than part with the dough, he pulled out a machete and started swinging. The commotion brought other employees to the front of the store who then joined in subduing Castillo.

From the witness box, Castillo told the court: “The one with the machete chopped me in my head. The one behind him whopped me with a piece of iron. When I held one of their hands, a third man came and started beating me. They all started beating and kicking and chopping and whopping.”

With the tables turned on him, Castillo told the court that he asked one of his assailants to please call the police and tell them that Wayne Castillo is in his store. The employees complied with the strange request and Castillo was arrested and charged.

News Five understands that Castillo is no stranger to the police, which is why he wanted them to come rescue him. His record includes a number of arrests for robbery, burglary, and drug trafficking. The prosecutions inevitably dropped through due to lack of witnesses. That was not the case this time, however, as McKenzie promptly found him guilty and sentenced him to five years behind bars.
