Another Youth Gunned Down In The Old Capital

Kareem Grant

While police determine the identity of the murder victim found at mile eight a while ago, on Wednesday night a twenty-six year old Belize City resident was shot in a yard close to his house in the south side of the Old Capital. A lone gunman walked up to the yard, opened the gates and unleashed a barrage of bullets on Kareem Grant. The motive is still under investigation; News Five’s Isani Cayetano has a report.

The latest homicide in the Old Capital took place inside a yard at the corners of Mahogany and Periwinkle streets on Wednesday night when a spray of bullets mortally injured twenty-six-year-old Kareem Grant.  While most were watching the NBA semifinals with rapt attention, at least four men, including Grant, were socializing at this residence when a lone gunman emerged on the scene.  The gate was surreptitiously opened and gunfire erupted.

“I hyah like nine shots, approximately di first four weh I know bout and I hayah like di first four da fu he.  According to weh I undastand da one eena ih mouth, one eena ih chest, one eena ih hand and one eena ih leg, yo dig.  Dat da di undastanding weh I get.”

That was around eight-thirty.  Police would respond sometime later.  By that time however, Grant, who lived a few houses away from where he was shot, had already been transported to the KHMH.

“Shots were heard from behind the fence and shortly after Kareem was seen with several gunshot wounds over his body.  He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and while undergoing surgery he passed away.”

At the scene of the deadly shooting, crime scene technicians would recover as many as five, nine millimeter expended shells.  The only telltale sign that someone was dispatched here is the bloodstained ground where Grant hemorrhaged before being rushed off.  Our eyewitness continues his recollection.

“When dehn gaan and push di gate and conscious that di young man gaan down, look ya di amount ah noise and di amount ah people, ih tek like half an hour before di police dehn cohn.  More than wah half an hour because fudge from di time yo hayah dehn thing you as police, as di citizen police da quick response we need pan dehn thing deh because if yo noh get quick response how yo think dehn wahn save your life or my life.”

According to Senior Superintendent Alden Dawson, while a reason has not been determined, a pair of men remains in detention pending the outcome of an investigation.

“At this time we have two persons in custody and the police are interviewing them.”

“Any motives?”

Alden Dawson

“Not as yet.”

“Is Grant known to the police?”

Alden Dawson

“Mr. Grant is just an ordinary citizen who lurks around.”

Grant’s family respectfully declined comment.  Curiously, the bystander likened what he saw to a baby in a fetal position.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“When I actually sih ahn pan di ground big man, look ya, da like yo, watch da lee baby deh pan di ground again yo undastand mi.  Da like how I feel it then because da like my brethren, I feel fu he too cause we all got blood and we all love one another as a black brother so we can’t sih wah nother brother just like that, di way how dehn di tek weh dehn life todeh day, yo dig.  Yo haffi think and realize weh yo di do before yo staat do it.”

There was more gun violence on Wednesday night. In the Backatown area in Dangriga police shot one of two men who they claim had fired at them first. The police say that they found on him a ski mask, a point twenty-two handgun containing six live rounds. They also recovered three point twenty-two expended shells from the scene. The man was injured in the leg and briefly hospitalized and released.
