VIP says PM Barrow’s Amendments to Petrocaribe Act are Artificial

Patrick Rogers

In the wake of the Petrocaribe Act 2015, dubbed the god-maker in some quarters, there has been a sustained outcry from virtually all sectors. There’s really no problem with the Petrocaribe initiative, conceptualized to assist the poorest of the poor through medium and long-term social programs. But there is a huge problem with the Petrocaribe Act which gives Prime Minister Dean Barrow carte blanche to use Petrocaribe money however and whenever he wants, for whatever purpose he deems fit, and in whatever quantities he chooses – all without oversight from the House of Representatives. Last week the PM threw out some proposed amendments, but at a press conference held today the VIP says it’s all a smokescreen – playing games with words while keeping the substance of the ‘god-maker’ fundamentally intact.

“Our point is that he’s playing games with us so that the public can think the PM is trying to work with you. He is not trying to work with us; he is trying to con us to make us think that he is trying to be appeasing and we are trying to be stubborn not wanting to accept that he has the power to do as he likes, you do not have the power to do as you like Mr PM. You are not ruling us, you should be leading us. From 2005 I had told the social partners I believe that every ten years we need to take to the streets so that the elected officials know that they are leaders and not rulers. That we do not only have power for a few seconds which is when we vote on election day which is the only time they would want us to believe we have power and then they say after that you gave us all the power because when you voted for Francis, it is Francis and P.U.P. you voted for so that cote doesn’t matter. They say you voted for the party and you gave the party the power and the party leader can do what he wants to do for five years. That’s not how it’s going to continue Mr. Barrow, if that’s the way it is it won’t continue like that. Thank God for the B.N.T.U. they have welcomed the opportunity to learn more about these issues, these are the teachers of our country, they need to know what it is we are dealing with here and they understand that we are just trying to establish living under the rule of law. That is all this is about, this is not anti-Dean Barrow, this is not anti-systems, this is all about living under the rule of law otherwise as we make the point we would be living lawlessly which you can call anarchy or in effect tyranny.”
