No Re-Registration Before Elections

Paul Morgan

The VIP is undertaking to carry out an education and awareness campaign on Petrocaribe, and one organization which has already signed on is the BNTU. But today’s press conference was about more than Petrocaribe. The VIP is also vocal about re-registration and told the media today that they have written to the Elections and Boundaries Commission with their concerns – and they got a response – basically stating that the Commission understands the concern about the voters list. But, and there’s a big but, the Commission said that re-registration is a large undertaking which will involve great deals of planning and substantial money, so it’s not going to happen. According to VIP representative Paul Morgan, the response of the Commission can only lead them to one conclusion.

Paul Morgan, Vision Inspired by the People

“The Barrow administration will be relying on a seriously compromise voter s list intended on leading us into this referendum with this compromised voters list. That my people is a travesty especially when you consider that this referendum that the Barrow administration is leading Belize toward might and is likely to cut our territory in half. That is a serious problem ladies and gentlemen and I think that it should be something that all of us as Belizean should pay keen attention to and should do something about. Continuing on the matter of representation, I must inform you that after careful research and consideration the VIP had become eerily aware that in these modern times when advance printing technology is rapidly combining the chemistry certain factors critical to the electoral; process must be handled in a more transparent and responsible manner. We must do so in order that there be a higher level of integrity to our electoral process. We must put high scrutiny into the printing and the custody of ballot papers. That is very important, am not making any accusations but we have come to this understanding the printing and custody of ballot papers, this letter for the elections and boundaries office says that the ballot papers and I presume all the boxes are given to the presiding officers or the officers in charge of the elections a day ahead. That is one day that we don’t know what is happening with these ballots and boxes and what happens immediately after the ballots are printed nobody knows except for the Elections and Boundaries.”
