GOB Should Support Territorial Volunteers, Says Courtenay

Eamon Courtenay

On Sunday about two hundred Belizeans, led by the Belize Territorial Volunteers, travelled to the Garbutt Falls border monument in Benque Viejo del Carmen. As they have been doing for many months, the group is trying to get government’s attention. They want government to get serious about the recognition of the border line between Belize and Guatemala. But from day one, GOB has discouraged the group and cautioned against them travelling to our own border in our own territory. Courtenay says that position is, quite frankly, ludicrous.

Eamon Courtenay, Former Foreign Minister/Attorney-General

“I thought the government would have been supporting them, I cannot for the life of me understand why it is that the foreign minister and the minister of national security will come on public television and tell Belizeans people not to go to the border line that we can’t protect you. It is hard to believe when the government of Belize is telling you that we can’t protect you if you go to our borderline. I thought we would have said go there and make Guatemala understand where the line is.”
