How Pat Andrews Was Selected as Next Ambassador to OAS

Pat Andrews

Career banker Patrick Andrews has been designated to succeed Ambassador Nestor Mendez as Belize’s top diplomat to the State Department and to the O.A.S. in Washington.  While his appointment is not yet official, Andrews will replace Mendez who was recently elected as Assistant Secretary General to the OAS.  Aside from his business acumen, Andrews is also said to be a close friend of the prime minister.  The appointment is the sole decision of the head of government in consultation with the Cabinet.  This afternoon, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington shed some light on the selection process.

Wilfred Elrington,  Minister of Foreign Affairs

Wilfred Elrington

“In the case of the new ambassador for Washington, I was consulted, as well as other members of the Cabinet, as well as the whole Cabinet.  The issue was raised on a number of occasions before the whole Cabinet and people made their suggestions, people were asked to think about and it was after a number of sessions that the name Pat Andrews surfaced.  I’m not sure who volunteered his name but I can say that the response from the Cabinet was a spontaneous yes.  He seemed to be the perfect choice for that post and why we say that is that, first of all, because of the OAS in dealing so much with the Latin American affairs it is thought most desirable that the person who becomes the ambassador to the OAS is somebody who is very fluent in Spanish.  You also need somebody who is very experienced, who is very well respected, who is articulate, who can speak well.  A person who comports himself very well and who would make the country proud.  As a banker, career banker, Pat has had a stellar reputation.  I never heard anything negative about him and he is very public spirited. And of course he comes from a stellar UDP family as well.  He is the brother of Joseph Andrews, the legendary Joseph Andrews who did so well for the United Democratic Party in Cayo District.  He’s also, I gather, quite a very close friend of the prime minister and a person for whom the prime minister has very high regard.  That’s a regard that we all share.  Because of the nature of the job of an ambassador really which is to advocate for the interest of the country, we thought that Pat would be well, well placed to be able to do that.  And that is how we all supported it and the prime minister then decided, yes he will be the man.”

Ambassador designate Pat Andrews assumes the post in early July.
