Petrocaribe Amendments to be Presented at Next House Meeting

Dean Barrow

The prime minister has made it abundantly clear that the controversial Petrocaribe Act will not be repealed.  What he will do is make specific amendments to clarify perceived grey areas in the existing legislation, particularly where it concerns the expenditure of funds.  Those changes, according to the P.M. will be brought to the House of Representatives when it meets in June.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The argument that we will just spend wildly and just account after the fact or not account at all I believe will be more than fully answered by the amendments that we are going to take to the House.  I will circulate it in due course, I’ve just received it and I want to make sure that it contains, it seems that way, everything that I’ve sent to the draftsman but as soon as I do that I will circulate it, it’s not going to the House until in June which is to be the end of the three month period which is the last we spoke about Petrocaribe but since I will have circulated it I expect to pass it all at once when we go to the House so that it can, because this doesn’t take effect until it is signed, so that immediately the teeth of the provisions can be felt and we can move forward.  But this, as I said is precisely because of the earlier point made, I believe that we have to respond to people especially when they may be mistakenly strong views that are genuinely held.”
