P.U.P. Engages In Back and Forth with Media

But was the elected area rep pushed out? That question was answered in a back and forth with the media even as the campaign manager acknowledged that it was a difficult process to replace the sitting area representative.

“He was pushed. That he was not willing to go but chose not to put up a fight. So we have three versions of the same event. May I ask which it is?”

Godfrey Smith, Campaign Manager, P.U.P.

“Well first of all, a point of clarifications, I didn’t hear Mister Ramos said that he was pushed. The fact—and he has attested to this himself—is that it was his decision and that is an absolutely truthful and accurate statements. That there were conversations? Yes. In the P.U.P., we are not buying out people to make changes. There is a process of consultation and discussion. Obviously, this is about politics some of the discussions will be difficult. And naturally, Ivan, as a sitting representative and obviously he will have some feelings about it. he has quite openly, frankly, expressed those. He’s expressed it to the media before; he has expressed it to myself and there is nothing wrong with him saying it to the people. The point is, it was his decision and as you have seen, he has embraced the new candidate—not only mentally, but physically.”

“So then either it is reform and renewal or it is a man just saying no mas and taps out. Either the party is embracing reform and renewal after the results of the municipal elections or people are just moving on in their own direction. You have to take ownership if you will say this is reform or renewal, the man didn’t perform…next.”

Godfrey Smith

“Well I can’t follow you down that path Jules. I think the fact that you have both gentlemen here who have made separate decisions individually and step forward to face the people and make the announcement is a clear sign that the party is engaged in a process of renewal. What you want is for us to get into the guts of the thing and we won’t…we are not here to get into that. Noh expect we to go into the bowels of the thing and dredge up all of that for your entertainment Jules. I know that makes the news, but we have to stick to the serious business of politics.  I won’t engage in a pointless banter on that point. He did mention idle talk, but Jules, you understand politics as well as anybody in here. There will be a lot of people saying a lot of things. So any discussion, the process of change will be those who are for; it’s a dialectic process. And in that, many things will be said, some relevant, some pointless, some good some bad some idle. What matters is the results. Please folks, respect the…we are in our house. This is the home of the P.U.P., we have invited the media; they didn’t ask to come. We’ve invited them and I urge you to show them respect and courtesy. Be not afraid, we are very capable of handling any questions, any suggestions, any comment that the media puts. So please respect our friends. They are our friends.”

Ramos is the third P.U.P. area rep to bow out of active party politics; the two others are Marco Tulio Mendez and Joseph Mahmud, who went further and resigned from the national assembly.
