Minister of National Security Criticizes Media for Crime Coverage

John Saldivar

According to our records, to date, there have been forty-nine murders in 2015, compared to thirty-four during the same period in 2014. In April 2014, there were ten murders. In April 2015, there were sixteen. In May 2014, there were seven. Today is May thirteenth, and there have already been six murders this month. So what’s the cause of the unprecedented violent trend? And what is the Ministry of National Security doing about it? Well, we don’t know because Minister John Saldivar didn’t say. On the podium in Crooked Tree this morning he instead said that there is a thirty percent decrease in major crimes. And, as he does so frequently, Saldivar lashed out at the media for reporting the murders.

John Saldivar, Minister of National Security

“We are working hard at the Ministry of National Security and at the Police Department to combat the rise in crime. I can tell you that even though on the news we sensationalize all the murders that have been taking place, I can tell you that since 2012 when I took over as the Minister of National Security, we have seen a thirty percent decrease in major crimes in this country, but that goes unnoticed because the media prefers to cover the murders and not the other crime statistics which show that we are making great progress. We continue to make great strides.”

We tried to get a comment from Saldivar in the hope that he would explain the media’s role where reporting on murder and violence is concerned, but he declined comment.

I am of the opinion that next to no crime news should be aired or published. News outlets should focus on the positive things, thereby creating a more peaceful environment.

Ostriches bury their head in a hole when danger is near, thinking if they are not seeing it, then its not around them. What happens? They get eaten.
